Juan Maria Carvajal Ramos
Naval Architect and Marine Renewable Energies Engineer
As an enthusiastic and experienced Naval Architect and Marine Renewable Energies Engineer with a strong background in yacht & ship design as well as in hydrodynamic simulation with CFD, advanced CAD modelling, workflow integration and optimization. Some years ago, my family and I decided to move to Bavaria. I love spending as much time as possible in the mountains or the sea with my two small kids and my Border Collie, and have a passion for something outside of yourself, whether for sailing, surfing, climbing or mountaineering.
One of my passions is sailing yacht design with a big interest in and understanding of the physics of yachts and ships. And in the future, I would like to take part in an IMOCA60 or VO65 project :-)
Today, I am working in a small team at Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies to transfer our LOHC-Technology in a power system propulsion on vessels based on hydrogen to meet the new challenges of energy sustainability, decarbonizing Shipping and low-carbon / zero fuels-emissions in the maritime energy transition.
During my paternity leave, I worked as Professional Consultant (part-time) at NAVITECTURE UG, where I am taking part in the design and engineering works of two high-speed crafts and one fast displacement vessel.
As a Project Manager, from November 2016 to March 2018, I worked at Sea Master Consulting & Engineering in Cádiz (Spain) where I was dealing with shipbuilding and renewable energies projects focused on design and engineering solutions.
During almost seven years, until October 2015, I worked as Senior Project Engineer at DNV GL in Potsdam in the fluid engineering department where I mainly lead hydrodynamic vessels optimisation projects with a special focus on enhancing energy efficiency. In this time, I have also been involved in different R&D projects, especially the world-leading ecological design and engineering solutions (ECO Solutions) and taken part actively in the R&D of automated processes based on numerical tools and 3D modelling techniques coupled with state-of-art CFD simulation.
From 2007 until 2009, as a Junior Naval Architect and Yacht Designer at Newcruise in Hamburg, my work has been mainly conceptual and basic design and engineering in yacht projects. In this period, I participated in the coordination of works in the building phase, where I practiced different manufacturing technologies, and enjoyed the hands-on work checking technical aspects of drawings and conceptual / basic design adapted to market needs and specific customer requirements, as well as the application and verification of rules for approval of Classification Societies.
I completed my degree in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Later, I extended my knowledge of mechanical engineering with a study abroad program at the Technische Universität in Berlin. In November 2011 I submitted my research project Seakeeping performance assessment of mega-yachts within the PhD program at the Polytechnic University of Madrid. In May 2015 I enhanced my skills in Renewable Energies for sustainable energy production with a one-year online Master’s degree in Marine Renewable Energies at Bureau Veritas Business School, where I enhanced my skills in the concept development and structural analysis of foundation structures for offshore wind turbines, as well as Met Ocean survey, construction support and geotechnical investigation.
My hobbies surfing and sailing help me to understand the complex and sometimes hostile marine environment, and rock climbing shows me to resolve new challenges under varying circumstances, which can only be done in adherence to strict safety procedures. I consider myself a creative problem solver as well as curious, bold and able to learn quickly and to perform well in a highly challenging environment. I am keen to employ my active, flexible, positive and team-oriented attitude and passionate to find the best solution within a creative, innovative, changing and multicultural environment.
